This report is based on true events and serves as a warning to all single male travelers – especially those who consider themselves “experienced.”
Toni works part-time as a programmer for us and full-time as a highly sought-after engineer. After spending several weeks on a construction project in Indonesia, he flew from Jakarta to Bangkok to let loose. The following lines are written from Toni’s first-person perspective.
My business-class flight from Jakarta to Bangkok departed late at night, and I landed in Bangkok around midnight. Normally I would have flown with Qatar Airways via Doha, but due to the Iran war, Thai Airways had to be booked instead. I took the opportunity to postpone my return flight from Bangkok to Munich so I could enjoy Bangkok as a single man.
It had been years since I had enjoyed some freedom in Thailand as a married man, and I intended to make the most of those two days.
Since I had checked into my own condominium, the plan was to book a hotel room in case I met a lady.
But due to lack of time, I failed to follow through with that plan – and events took their course…
I ignored the advice of ThaiSingleReisen and decided – as always – to go hunting on my own. That’s how I had done it for the past 30 years after meeting nearly a thousand women.
Since I had come from Jakarta, where there are far fewer tourists, I didn’t want to head straight into Bangkok’s crowded hotspots. So I asked a taxi driver about the formerly well-known “Shark Club” on Petchaburi Road. It had long since closed – instead, he took me to a club in the basement of a well-known 5-star hotel.
Mistake #1: Never ask a taxi driver for recommendations. They only take you where they earn a commission.
The club was decent: upscale atmosphere, coyote dancers, and a smoking room. I ordered several rounds for the girls and enjoyed myself – after two weeks of continuous work, it was long overdue.
Since I’m married to a Thai woman, I had no intention of meeting a Thai girl. I politely turned most of them down or limited things to dancing and drinks.
As fate would have it, a young woman approached me. I spoke to her in Thai – at first I thought she was joking because she did not understand me. Shortly afterward, however, it became clear that she was from Vietnam.
Since I have had close ties to Thailand for 30 years, I can read and speak Thai. Seeing a Vietnamese woman completely alone in Bangkok without any Thai language skills therefore struck me as unusual – and made her all the more intriguing to me.
Mistake #2: Savior instinct. No woman in Bangkok needs your help – not even if she’s from Vietnam and doesn’t speak Thai.
We hit it off immediately, danced, kissed, and simply clicked. For some reason I quickly developed trust in the Vietnamese woman – perhaps out of a protective instinct because she seemed alone in a big city without Thai language skills.
Once I had enough of the disco music, I decided to continue to an after-hours club with Thai live music – and took the Vietnamese woman with me.
Mistake #3: Never bring sand to the beach. If you’ve found a lady, take her to the hotel room – not to another club.
Exhausted from the flight and after several beers, I ignored every basic rule. These are highlighted throughout the article as mistakes. Mistake #3 – “Don’t bring sand to the beach” – means that once you take an escort to another venue, her clock keeps running. You pay for her time – don’t waste it in a second club.
At my favorite Thai club, credit cards aren’t accepted – cash only. My 4,000 THB in cash had run out, and when the bill came, my Vietnamese companion offered to contribute 700 THB.
As a gentleman, I refused. I asked her to wait while I went downstairs to the ATM next to the club. Since I had forgotten my bank card at home and only had my credit card – and Thai ATMs now charge around 350 THB in fees – I withdrew 20,000 THB at once.
Mistake #4: Manage your cash wisely. Avoid having to withdraw money in the middle of the night. Pay by credit card whenever possible. Use apps like Grab to save cash.
As mentioned at the beginning of the article, I no longer had time to book a hotel room – and so we ended up at my apartment at dawn.
Mistake #5: Trusting too quickly. Since my lady wanted the bill in the club, I gave her 4,000 THB in the taxi right away. I thought that would cover the night (far from it, as you’ll see).
To get in the mood, we watched a few adult films together. I held my Vietnamese companion in my arms – and while lying close together, I eventually fell deeply asleep…
As so often in life, the feeling of security can be deceptive – a man thinks he has everything under control when he doesn’t. Around 10 a.m., I woke up to every man’s nightmare: money gone, woman gone.
Professionally, I’ve traveled to nearly every continent and met almost a thousand women in my life – yet I had to endure this bitter experience in my own apartment.
Fortunately, neither my laptop nor other valuables were stolen. The financial loss amounted to around 13,000 THB and was manageable. Far worse was the shock of my own poor judgment – and the realization that I apparently wasn’t nearly as experienced as I believed.
The Vietnamese woman was likely not a professional thief, because otherwise she would have known that Thai condominiums require a keycard to use the elevator. She also took a considerable risk – I could have woken up at any moment. Later, surveillance footage showed that she fled at dawn by taking the emergency stairwell down from the 17th floor.
Mistake #6: Never take an escort to your own home. Trust no one blindly. Be especially cautious with foreign women in Thailand – many come from criminal backgrounds.
After collecting myself, I asked the condominium staff to show me the surveillance footage. It turned out the woman had been with me for barely an hour. The moment I fell into deep sleep, she decided to rob me and flee.
The next day, I returned to the club sober – and suddenly noticed all the details I had completely overlooked the night before due to alcohol and euphoria.
The club was full of Vietnamese and African women. The Thai women were merely hostesses paid by the club to entertain guests and encourage drink orders. The actual escort business was handled by the foreign women.
When I directly asked one Vietnamese woman about her price, she replied: 12,000 THB – negotiable.
At that moment, I felt like a complete beginner again, transported back 30 years, and had to admit that Bangkok’s nightlife had changed without me noticing.
If only I had booked a woman through ThaiSingleReisen – had my hunting instinct not been so strong…
Tips for Single Male Travelers in Bangkok: How to Protect Yourself from Theft
- Carry only as much cash as necessary. Pay by credit card whenever possible – including in taxis (see next point).
- Use apps like Grab and pay rides automatically by credit card. Taxi scams have pushed many travelers toward ride apps. In less touristy areas, regular taxis are still often the better choice.
- Keep a clear head. Don’t let pity, savior instinct, or manipulation cloud your judgment.
- Be especially cautious with foreign women in Bangkok. Many are under pressure from traffickers or intermediaries and may be heavily indebted.
- Do not enter Bangkok’s nightlife overtired or drunk. Alcohol, fatigue, and euphoria lead to costly mistakes. Drink a glass of water or soda with every alcoholic beverage.
- Even if it may seem less exciting: Book women through ThaiSingleReisen. It is often cheaper – and you can trust your Thai companion with your wallet without waking up to unpleasant surprises.
